Dare to Lead: The Courage to Be Vulnerable as a Leader

We often see leadership as strength — confidence, direction, and authority. But Brené Brown’s “Dare to Lead” turns that idea inside out and shows that true leadership is about courage and vulnerability.

She says, “Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.” And I couldn’t agree more.

As a leader, I’ve learned that the moments that connect us most deeply with our team or clients are not when we appear perfect — but when we’re honest, real, and human. When we say, “I don’t have all the answers, but I’m willing to figure it out with you.”

Here’s what this book reminded me to practice:

  • Lead with empathy, not ego. Listening first often solves more than speaking fast.
  • Courage means being seen. Even when things are uncertain or uncomfortable.
  • Trust is built in small moments. Through consistency, not grand gestures.

Leadership is no longer about having power over people, but about empowering with people. And when you lead with heart, you create a team that moves not just for targets — but for purpose.

Reflection Prompt:
👉 When was the last time you showed vulnerability as a leader — and what did it open up for you or your team?
