We often fail to identify the deepest problem when it comes to money—and that is the way we think about it.
Before I became a financial advisor, I made plenty of money mistakes. Not because I didn’t earn enough — but because my relationship with money was built on fear, scarcity, and a lot of “bahala na.” Over the years, I’ve had to unlearn a lot. Here are five mindset shifts that genuinely changed things for me.
1. From “I Can’t Afford It” to “How Can I Afford It?”
Saying “I can’t afford it” is a dead end. Asking “how can I?” opens a door. One shuts down thinking, the other activates it. This doesn’t mean you go into debt for everything — it means you start getting creative and intentional about your financial goals instead of accepting limitations as permanent.
2. From Spending What’s Left to Saving First
Most of us grow up thinking savings is what’s left after spending. It took me years to flip that. Save first, then live on the rest. Kahit maliit lang, ang mahalaga ay may nailalaan ka para sa sarili mo bago mo ibigay sa lahat ng iba.
3. From “Insurance Is an Expense” to “Insurance Is Protection”
I used to think premiums were money wasted — until I saw what happened to families who didn’t have it. An HMO, a life insurance plan, a critical illness rider — these aren’t expenses. They’re shields. The cost of not having them when you need them is always higher than the premiums you paid.
4. From Comparing to Others to Running My Own Race
Comparison is the thief of sound financial decisions. What works for your friend’s investment portfolio might not work for your season of life. I stopped looking sideways and started looking forward — at my own goals, my own timeline, my own definition of “enough.”
5. From Avoiding to Facing
A lot of people avoid checking their bank balance, looking at their debts, and having financial conversations. I was like that too. But avoidance doesn’t make problems disappear—it just gives them time to grow. Facing your finances, even when it’s uncomfortable, is the first step toward changing them.
